Panama City Beach Labor Day Fishing Report

Event Start Date: 2022/09/02

2022/09/02

We made it through August with zero named tropical storms and so we enjoyed clean water. The temperature is still hot. We have had an abundance of bait around the pier consisting of Alewives and small Hardtails. Red Drum have dominated the shallow water. Bonita, Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, Hardtails, Ladyfish, and small Jacks have been regulars this week. We also had a few King Mackerel and A big Jack Crevalle caught. At least three Sailfish were spotted but no hook-ups.

Big summer Bonita seemed to be the only consistent species caught over the past few weeks. They were here all this week too but were not as hungry as before. Several days they only teased us but would not eat. However, we were able to coax several to hit our bait. Thursday, I had a nice one bite and it begin to peel line off the spool. I looked around and saw a young teen and her mom watching. I asked if she would like to fight the Bonita and she said yes. Taylor, from Tennessee, was doing great and handling the fight well until the tax man showed. “Flipper” decided he wanted the fish more than us. At lease she was able to land the head and get a picture. Brandon and I were fortunate to land our fish whole. Several others were decked up to 12 pounds.

Spanish Mackerel have been either hit or miss. If you were there when the schools came through, you could catch quite a few. Bubble rigs with a straw, spoon or jig worked well. Only a few were caught on bait. Today, there was about an hour midday that the bite was hot. Brad, Derek and Nory put several in their coolers.

Only a few Kings showed during the week. Bill from Birmingham got a “schoolie” Sunday. Yesterday, I got a 12.64 pound King on an Alewife. This afternoon, Nory decked a King that was just shy of 17 pounds.

Yesterday we were watching a tide line as it moved closer to the pier. We watched as three schools of large fish were bursting bait schools. After about thirty minutes, we learned what they were as a large group of Jack Crevalle charged the bait around the pier. Carlos was the only one ready and hooked one on his Colt Sniper. It gave him quite a battle but was finally brought to the gaff. It scaled in at 28.1 pounds.
